On 14 February, the European Commission published a report, ‘towards a European policy for technology infrastructures’, highlighting key challenges and opportunities for the technology infrastructure landscape to contribute to enhancing European competitiveness.
The aim of the report is to contribute towards creating a more comprehensive technology infrastructure landscape in Europe, tackling current challenges in the technology infrastructure ecosystem, such as the fragmented funding landscape and the limited accessibility to research and technology infrastructures.
The report calls for a clear EU-wide definition of Technology Infrastructures, better access through simpler procedures and more funding, a new system to prioritise investment in key technologies, stronger EU-level coordination to align initiatives, and dedicated funding to support the growth and sustainability of Technology Infrastructures.
Our association was an invited contributor to the Commission expert group on technology infrastructures, through CESAER Envoy for Science & Technology Infrastructures Lars Börjesson.
"Being appointed to a European Commission expert group on technology infrastructures as a CESAER Envoy provided a valuable opportunity to represent the voice of universities of science and technology on a critical issue for research, innovation, and education in Europe. The group’s efforts culminated in a comprehensive report on technology infrastructures, offering key insights to guide the European Commission and member states in shaping future policies, strategies, and funding programmes.

Our association will remain deeply engaged in the topics of science and technology infrastructures, with efforts led by our Task Force Openness of Science & Technology.
